SUTTON 1948

The London Olympiad lasts for the four years from the close of the Beijing Games in August to the London Games in 2012. Sutton 1948, part of Sutton’s contribution to the activities, is a multi-faceted heritage project that will commemorate all areas of the Borough at the time that the Games were last held in our capital.

The first part of the project is the collection of memorabilia, photographs and memories of Sutton during the period and the 1948 Olympics, the best items from which will be exhibited at the Europa Gallery in the Central Library . In addition, the whole collection will be recorded for the Borough archives to help historians exploring this bit of our past.

You are encouraged to look in your lofts or bottom drawers, or to talk to elderly relatives and friends, to see what you can find to help us build a picture of Sutton 60 years ago and, if possible, any items that relate to the Olympics that were taking place in Wembley. Objects selected for display will of course be returned to their owners after the event.

We would initially like to talk to you and record any objects or material you may have, with the possibility of borrowing them later for display.

Please telephone Honeywood Museum for further details on 020 8770 4297.

Secondly, the most interesting objects, their owners and the stories behind them are to be used by students at Carshalton College in a video oral history, which will be shown at the Europa Gallery exhibition and archived for posterity.
