ABOUT
THE EXHIBITION
The Olympics were last held in London in
1948 in the period of shortages and austerity following the Second World
War. Discover how different life in Sutton was then.
See a display of paintings from the late
1940s and material from the 1948 Olympic Games.
Croydon Airport was still active in the
1940s and the Croydon Airport Society will have a stand at the
exhibition

DROP-IN CRAFTS
Available throughout the exhibition during normal Europa Gallery opening
hours. Children must be accompanied by a parent or carer.
Make your own Ration Book
Although the war ended in 1945 rationing of certain items continued
until 1954. Make your own ration book and try to imagine how you would
have coped.
Make a Dress Doll
Cloth was still rationed and clothing used a minimum amount of
material, but French designer Christian Dior had introduced “The New
Look” in 1947 which featured much fuller long skirts. Cut out a
dress doll and some clothes then colour them in. Could you afford to be
fashionable with your coupons?
Make your own Olympic Medal
The top three athletes in each sport at the Olympics are awarded
medals. Create your own medal to take home.
Make your own Laurel Wreath
The victors of the original Olympic Games in Ancient Greece received
a wreath of leaves.
Make yourself a Paper Plane
Commemorate the first major United Kingdom air defence exercise
since the Battle of Britain: Operation Dagger took place between
3 and 7 September 1948.

No need for pre-booking. Children must be accompanied by a parent or
carer.

Make a Miniature Allotment
Rationing did not end with the war, and growing your own food remained
necessary. Craft your own miniature allotment.

Design your own unique Olympic torch.

1948 Floor Art
Wandle Valley School pupils under the direction of their art teacher,
Lucy Dean and Inspirall artist Karen Barnett, will work with Malti Patel
of Apsara Arts to create a large piece of floor art inspired by the 1948
Olympic Games poster, with a contemporary take on the traditional
rangoli art form from Gujarat, India, using both recycled materials and
more conventional coloured food stuffs such as rice. See it take shape,
and contribute to its construction.

Make and animate shadow and toy theatre figures with Karin Jashpara
Much of London is in ruins…but it is 1948, and the Olympics are
coming…
Transform a shoe box into a post-war stadium, showing athletes training
and competing in the 1948 London Olympics. Suitable for children aged 5
years and over. (Up to10 children at any one time - first come, first
served)

Rag Rug Making
A thrift craft which was popular in the austerity period during and
after WW2. Take part in making a “Make Do and Mend” rag rug with local
artist Mandy Dwyer.

1948 Singalong
Come and enjoy a selection of top 20 hits from 1948 and join in if
you wish.

“Is it Saturday or is it 1948?” Storytelling Performance
by Anjali Paul
"The best storyteller in town" tells the true story of an
extraordinary trip to Sutton High Street one Saturday morning …in 2010.

6.15 - 7.45pm
Surrey Jive
perform 20 minute sets between 6.15pm-7.45pm showcasing swing jive
dancing from the 1940s. Based in Epsom, Surrey Jive teach weekly classes
for complete beginners or intermediate level and are available to hire
for demonstrations, charity events or themed parties. For

Sutton Amateur Dramatic Club presents “The Tunnel” by Mabel
Constanduros and Howard Agg
A short play written for radio that is still exciting more than 60 years
since it was first broadcast on 1 May 1946.
Founded in 1902, Sutton Amateur Dramatic Club stages 3 major productions
