Day 3 - Friday 10th July 2009 |
|
Another dry day with reasonable progress. The foundations of
the dining room have appeared in trench G which we started
yesterday (see plan). Here the structure is substantially
built and the foundations are much wider than in trench H on
the other side of the room. We may do some more work in
trench H to investigate this.
We have started a new trench (N) to look at the foundations
of the round turret near the south east corner of the
building. A curbed feature emerged at the end of the
afternoon which is probably where the turret has been
demolished. We will explore this further tomorrow.
Trench D remains enigmatic. It cuts into the line of the
north wall of the house exposed in trench G a few metres
away but there is no sign of the wall - just layer after
layer of rubble. The find shows that rubble was deposited
when the building was demolished. We are still thinking about
what exactly was done and why. |
