Sutton's Energy Heritage
- can you help with this imaginative project?

Tram Terminus, Sutton Grapes,
8pm 21st August 1935

Our Low Energy Heritage

Do you remember the coal man coming to make deliveries, or milk being brought to your doorstep and poured by ladle into your jug? Do you want to help Sutton and the surrounding area to become greener? Then EcoLocal want you to get in touch to take part in an oral history project.

EcoLocal, in partnership with the Heritage Lottery Fund, is looking at how local people used less energy and produced less waste in the early to mid 20th century and how energy was produced locally in the 19th and early 20th century - people with skills that could help research this area of local history are needed.

Did you:

- travel on steam trains?

- wring clothes out through the mangle?

- light your home by paraffin lamps?

- wear 'long johns' instead of whacking up the central heating?

- walk to local shops or markets with your mother?

- get deliveries from bakers, butchers, and greengrocers by horse or cycle ?

- learn skills to mend and make things

- keep family photos from these times?

Please get in touch - EcoLocal are keen to record memories and find out about any energy saving tips the older generation can pass on to people who live in a more throw away age e.g. steaming rather than boiling your food or reusing washing up water to water the plants.

If you would like to share your memories or help out as a volunteer researcher or interviewer then please call Michael on 020 8404 1520 or email heritage@ecolocal.org.uk
